How to use it
- For Gregorian to Hijri, pick a date. Today is filled in for you.
- For Hijri to Gregorian, enter the day, choose the month and type the year (1318 to 1500 AH).
- Read the converted date and the day of the week. If your country follows a local moon sighting, allow a day either way.
How it works
The Hijri calendar is lunar: each month has 29 or 30 days, and a year has 354 or 355. Umm al-Qura sets each month's length from astronomical data for Mecca rather than from a fixed pattern, so there's no short formula for it. This page reads the Umm al-Qura tables built into your browser's date library, the same ICU data phones and operating systems use. Going from Hijri to Gregorian, it makes a first guess with the arithmetic calendar, then checks the days around that guess until it finds the exact match.
The tabular (arithmetic) calendar is the fallback and the comparison line: 30-year cycles in which 11 years get an extra day in the last month.
Julian day = d + ⌈29.5 × (m − 1)⌉ + 354 × (y − 1) + ⌊(3 + 11y) ÷ 30⌋ + 1,948,438.5
Worked example
October 20, 2026 is 9 Jumada al-Ula 1448 in Umm al-Qura, a Tuesday. The tabular calendar gives 8 Jumada al-Ula 1448: same month, one day apart, which is typical. The other way round, 1 Ramadan 1447 converts to Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Ramadan 1447 has 30 days in Umm al-Qura, so 1 Shawwal 1447 falls on March 20, 2026.
Assumptions and limits
- Umm al-Qura is Saudi Arabia's civil calendar. For the start of Ramadan, Eid and other religious dates, many countries rely on an actual moon sighting, which can move the date by a day.
- Before 1420 AH (1999), Saudi Arabia used different rules. Earlier dates here follow today's method worked backwards, so they may not match the date printed on an old Saudi document.
- If your browser has no Umm al-Qura data, the page says so and falls back to the tabular calendar, which matches Umm al-Qura or is a day off most of the time and occasionally two.
- The range is 1318 to 1500 AH (1900 to 2077). The date changes at midnight, while in Islamic practice the day begins at sunset, so an evening event may carry the next Hijri date.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?
It's the calculated Hijri calendar published by Saudi Arabia. Each month's start is worked out in advance from the moon's position as seen from Mecca, rather than waiting for a sighting.
Why does my local calendar show a different date?
Many countries start each month after a moon sighting or with their own calculation, so the first day of Ramadan or Eid can land a day earlier or later than in Umm al-Qura. For religious dates, go by your local authority.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
354 or 355. Twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days come to about 11 days fewer than a Gregorian year, which is why Ramadan moves earlier every year.
